Air conditioner installation is something we at Platinum Plumbing and Heating do every day. It can be easy to think of it as routine and straightforward. But for a typical homeowner, this process only occurs once a decade, if that. If you’re a newer homeowner, you might never have gotten a new air conditioner! How could you possibly know what the process entails?
It’s always reassuring to know as much as you can before having an experience. And since we are so experienced at AC installation, we’re the perfect people to ask. What should you expect during air conditioning installation? What’s the process like, and how long does it take? We’ll tell you all about it.
Pre-Installation Steps
Before your installation appointment, you’ll begin by getting a professional assessment of your home and your needs and how to use that information to choose a new AC system. Then, it will be determined whether anything needs to be done before the system is actually installed. That will be scheduled in addition to the installation appointment.
What kind of extra steps might be necessary? If you’ve never had central AC in your home before, additional preparations will need to be made. Perhaps you’ll need to have ducts installed. Or if your existing ducts are in terrible condition, repair or replacement should occur before you start using your new AC system.
Installation Day
When your installers arrive, they’ll take a look at everything so they can make as clear a plan as possible for how to approach the installation. They’ll explain the plan to you as well. Then they’ll prepare the area, moving things as needed, or covering your floor or furnishings with a drop cloth.
The old units, indoors and out, must be turned off, disconnected, and carried away. The new units must be brought in. They’ll be situated and connected and turned on. It’s important to make sure they’re running properly! At that point, your installers can answer any questions you have about how to use the new system, and make sure you’re comfortable with it. Then they’ll tidy up and say goodbye.
Installation Timeline
If any of those extra considerations apply to your AC installation, it may take place over more than one day. But if it’s a simple switch-over from one central air conditioner to another, it will be able to happen in a single day. Plan for eight hours or so, but that whole window might not be necessary. Sometimes an installation takes half as long as that.
Streamlining Your Installation
How can you make that installation appointment go as quickly as possible? By being as prepared as possible. If your technicians don’t need to clear paths, move furniture, rake the area around the outdoor unit, or anything else along those lines, they’ll be able to get right to the installation itself. Just clear as much space as you can in any places the installers will need to go.
You should also consider your pets at this point. Having strangers around can be stressful, or it can be so exciting that your pets will be adorably—but inconveniently—underfoot the whole time. It’s easiest for everyone if all animals are kept in a separate space during your AC installation.
